Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI)

The Italian Space Agency (Agenzia Spaziale Italiana - ASI) was founded in 1988 to coordinate all of Italy's efforts and investments in the space sector, building upon space activities that began in the 1960s. The agency consolidated the extensive experience of Italian scientists who had been investigating space and astronautics since the late 19th century, creating a unified national space program. ASI's main headquarters are located in Rome, with direct operational control over the Centre for Space Geodesy (CGS) in Matera, Italy, and the Broglio Space Centre in Kenya (formerly the San Marco Equatorial Range), currently used as a communications ground station. With an annual budget of approximately €2.0 billion (as of 2020) and around 200 direct employees, ASI operates under joint direction of Italy's Ministry of Research and Ministry of Defence. The agency has established Italy as a major player in European space activities, particularly through leadership of the VEGA small launcher program (fully designed in Italy) and development of the COSMO-SkyMed constellation of Earth observation satellites for both military and civilian applications. ASI maintains strong partnerships with ESA, NASA, and other international agencies, contributing significantly to missions including the International Space Station, planetary exploration, and Earth observation programs. Notable achievements include the LARES satellite for testing general relativity (2012) and current development of the Multi-Purpose Habitat module for NASA's Artemis lunar program.

The CSA built upon Canada's pioneering space heritage that began at the end of World War II, including the development of the Black Brant sounding rocket in the 1950s-60s and the launch of Alouette-1 in 1962, making Canada the third country to have a satellite in orbit. Headquartered at the John H. Chapman Space Centre in Longueuil, Quebec, with offices in Ottawa and liaison offices in Houston, Washington, and Paris, the CSA is led by President Lisa Campbell (since September 2020). The agency is internationally renowned for its robotics expertise, having developed the iconic Canadarm series that has become synonymous with Canadian space achievement. CSA's major contributions include Canadarm on the Space Shuttle, Canadarm2 on the International Space Station, and the upcoming Canadarm3 for the Lunar Gateway. The agency operates the Radarsat constellation for Earth observation and has produced notable astronauts including Chris Hadfield (first Canadian ISS commander, 2013), Julie Payette, and current astronauts Jeremy Hansen and David Saint-Jacques. Under the 2020 Canada-US Gateway treaty, Canada will send the first Canadian astronaut beyond low Earth orbit on the Artemis II lunar flyby mission, with Jeremy Hansen selected for this historic flight scheduled for February 2026.

OHB SE originated from Otto Hydraulik Bremen GmbH, a small hydraulics and marine systems firm established in 1958. The company was acquired by Christa Fuchs in 1981, and when her husband Manfred Fuchs joined in 1985 after leaving his position as Director of Aerospace at ERNO/MBB, they redirected the company's focus toward space technology. This transformation marked the beginning of OHB's evolution into one of Europe's leading space companies. In 1991, the company was renamed Orbital- und Hydrotechnologie Bremen-System GmbH, and a new headquarters near the University of Bremen was opened in October 1988. Today, OHB SE is headquartered in Bremen, Germany, and has grown into a major European aerospace and technology group with expertise spanning satellite systems, orbital infrastructure, and space exploration technologies. OHB has achieved significant milestones including development of BremSat (one of Germany's first small satellites, 1994), delivery of the SAR-Lupe radar reconnaissance system for German armed forces (2007), construction of ten of the fourteen Galileo satellites currently in orbit, and all six Meteosat Third Generation weather satellites (first launched December 2022). The company continues to expand its capabilities through subsidiaries like MT Mechatronics, which is building support structures for major ground-based telescopes including the Giant Magellan Telescope. OHB's success demonstrates the European private space sector's growing capabilities in satellite manufacturing, Earth observation, and space infrastructure.

Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA)

Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA) was founded in 2018 as a German NewSpace start-up with the mission to "build rockets just like cars" – emphasizing mass production techniques and cost efficiency. The company was established as a spin-off from OHB SE by Jörn Spurmann (CCO), Stefan Brieschenk (COO), Hans Steininger (CEO of MT Aerospace), and Marco Fuchs (CEO of OHB SE). RFA is headquartered in Augsburg, close to Munich, with composite manufacturing in Portugal, test facilities in Sweden and Scotland, and its launch facility at SaxaVord Spaceport in Scotland. RFA's flagship product is RFA One, a three-stage rocket designed to launch small satellites and payloads of up to 1,300 kg into polar orbits. The 30-meter tall vehicle with 2-meter diameter features nine Helix staged-combustion engines in the first stage, each producing 100kN of thrust. The company has been developing RFA One since 2019, applying automotive-industry inspired mass production methods to reduce costs and increase launch cadence. On January 16, 2025, RFA achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first company in Europe to receive a spaceflight operator license for vertical launches of a privately developed orbital rocket from the UK Civil Aviation Authority. While the program experienced a setback with a first-stage explosion during a static fire test in August 2024 at SaxaVord, the company rapidly recovered, was selected for the European Space Agency's European Launcher Challenge in July 2025, and continues development toward an inaugural test flight from Scotland. With major development milestones completed including second-stage qualification, orbital transfer vehicle testing, and payload fairing systems, RFA is focused on completing first-stage development and conducting full hot-fire tests.
