NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Anil Menon recently completed a critical spacewalk outside the International Space Station (ISS), marking a significant milestone in the station's power system upgrade. The 6.5-hour extravehicular activity (EVA) took place on August 6, 2026, and involved the installation of mounting hardware for new solar arrays, known as ISS Roll-Out Solar Arrays (iROSAs).
The iROSAs are designed to increase the station's electricity supply by 20% to 30%, which is essential for supporting the ongoing scientific research and operational requirements of the ISS. During the spacewalk, Meir and Menon worked on the 3B power channel, located on the far right of the station's backbone truss, and successfully installed the seventh and final set of mounting hardware.
From a technical perspective, the astronauts utilized an articulating portable foot restraint (APFR) to secure themselves in place while working on the exterior of the station. They also employed a worksite interface (WIFEX) to facilitate the installation process. The iROSAs will be rolled out from the station's truss structure, providing additional power generation capabilities without requiring significant modifications to the existing infrastructure.
